What Are Window Energy Ratings?

  • They additionally measure for the L-value, which shows how much air leakage is present. Poor window seals will allow cold in and the hot out, making heating bills rise.

 

Does the Frame Affect the Rating?

Frame choice plays a big role in how efficient a window can be:

  • uPVC frames are popular in the UK for their affordability and are often used in A-rated windows.
  • Aluminum frames are strong, but without a thermal break can struggle with insulation.
  • Timber frames are naturally insulating, but require more maintenance.

 

Glazing

Double glazing has been the UK standard for many years now. It consists of two panes of glass with a layer of gas in between. Typically, it can achieve A to A+ window energy ratings.

The other option is triple glazing which uses three panes of glass instead of two, offering much better insulation. Often rated A+ to A++, it’s ideal for energy-conscious homeowners or individuals living in cold climates.
